Use ext power and start with the hardest reset --- F plus V/M held and turn power on. I recall this solved this problem in the past for at least one or two folks. You can still hear the switch closure tone in the speaker. (Trigger point varies slightly among radios) If the radio is operated on a higher voltage, such as 13 to 15 volts, there is NO ICON visible when 5 watts power setting is selected. (This has been stated before, but it seems there is always someone confused) This ICON change is strictly triggered by the VOLTAGE LEVEL, and it does not matter if the voltage is from EXTERNAL power or INTERNAL BATTERY, the AMOUNT of voltage is what matters. (The ICON will flash at 5 watts with EXTERNAL power, if the external voltage is much lower than 12 volts, and will DISSAPPEAR at 5 watts with INTERNAL BATTERIES, if their voltage is higher than approx. 11.5 volts)--73, KC3VO Bob Curry =========================================================================== Low mike gain on SSB Posted by: "steppappy" signalfreq@gmail.com steppappy Date: Fri Jun 1, 2007 3:23 am ((PDT)) And I thought I was the only one with this problem; I have an older 817 and when I try to select 5w output, I don't see any flashing icons on the display. In fact, the icon disappears entirely. I have assumed this to be 5w. My FM mic gain, when set to 50, makes me sound like I'm slightly off frequency. I think I'll just replace this radio with an Icom or Kenwood. Put a fork in me; I'm done.
