I don't know if you've got the Buddipole yet, but when you receive it there should be a tuning chart along with it that provides good starting points. The quickest way to tune the antenna is to set it up according to the chart, connect it to and set the radio to 5W CW and MTRpwr. Then close the key and watch the meter. If all bars are showing, you've got as near a perfect match as you can ever hope for. Most of the times, especially if you are in the clear, that is what you will get. On some bands (e.g. 15 meters) it might pay to do a little experimenting to get the whips out more and use less inductance, but the settings on the cheatsheet will give you a good starting point. Unless you want to do bandhopping without readjusting the antenna, or use bands below 40 meters or above two meters, there is certainly no need for a tuner. Then just put the Z-11 in line to the antenna (preferably, close to the antenna) and you are ready to go. The Z-11 will match a wide range of loads, resonant antenna or not. In the automatic mode, it tunes whenever it senses greater than a 1.5:1 SWR. You can force tuning to occur with the tune button. (Tuning does take a steady carrier for a few seconds.) The Z-11 will tune even at the 817's lowest power setting, too, and the latching relays mean you can turn it off once you've tuned and it will still provide a match, saving battery power. Cortland ================================================================== Subject: Re: z11/OTT confusion. I am wonder what the need for the OTT is? From reading the z11 user manual the z-11 will tune automaticly when the SWR gets to high. So why have the extra hardware to make the tuner work. From the z-11 manual: Current consumption: 10 to 190 mA, 75 mA average. Zero current draw once tuned! Since your not drawing power once tuned, what function does the ott do that I am missing. Typically, you need to generate a constant carrier to tune. You are not normally in AM or FM mode on HF. So, you need to change modes, tune, and change modes back to CW or SSB. Granted, this is not a big deal, unless you have the accessory and decide you couldn't have lived without it after all. It's just a convenience. By the way, the One Touch Tune is a microprocessor that reads the rig's mode, changes to a continuous carrier mode, and when done it resets the radio back. It is nothing more than an automatic button pusher. Something I have noticed just today..... If I turn the rig on in CW mode, I get "C" sent in morse out of the speaker. It doesn't do it on other modes, U, L, F or A for example. I've had my 817 for two years or more and I've not noticed that before :) I have always said that the FT-817 never stops suprising me :) Darren GW7HOC MW5HOC daz(at)ft-817.co.uk http://www.mw5hoc.4t.com ================================================================================= Date: Tue, 15 Jun 2004 09:17:19 +0200 From: "Jochen Cichon" Subject: Re: Ever notice this ? :) Sorry I can't resist to be sarcastic...
